During the Great Recession, (2007 – 2009) the printing industry felt the impact of the chaotic change and suffered throughout the economic downturn. Many printing companies in the Bay Area closed their doors. We were employees of one of the printing companies that closed. With courage and a firm vision we decided to start our own printing company in February 2010. We purchased the assets and receivable from Perry and Cindy Mundorff, who ran their business as dba Dakota Press. We decided to keep the name and were incorporate as Dakota Press, Inc.
In the beginning, to be competitive, we invested in our pre-press department, estimating system and added digital printing capabilities.
As time went on, we went for certifications, Bay Area Green Business, WBENC, Women Business Enterprise and NCMSDC, Minority Business Enterprise. We are also a Union Shop. All of the certifications have help grow our business.
Why a buffalo as our logo? We have a buffalo as part of our logo, mainly because of the name Dakota; Gary really associates buffalos with the Dakota’s. I felt there was a subliminal message that at one time the buffalo a very strong animal was almost extinct but they came back. There has been so much talk that ‘print is dead’ but we feeling that print is strong and will come back.
More to come….
